Getting pumped up for yet the biggest and best Arthritis Walk ever! This year's kickoff luncheon was wonderful, filled with friends and supporters of the Arthritis Foundation. I'm proud to be a part of Wisdom Walkers, a team formed by my dear friend Dorothy Leone-Glasser. Visit her website, she's an inspiration and has truly become a mentor to me as well as Heidi McIntyre who is the greatest advocate of arthritis I've ever known. These women are why I walk and will always champion this important cause until a cure is found. Also icing on the cake was to see my friends Isabella and Zach there as well, they are just a joy and smile through the everyday pain of arthritis.

Here's a photo with my friend Zach! I've known him a little over two years. He was diagnosed with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) when he was six years old. Last year, he missed 57 days of school as a result of pain so bad that it often caused him to be so sick it was so bad that his body went into shock. After one procedure and two surgeries on his hips, he is doing better, but still lives with pain daily. He is unable to enjoy many of the activities that other kids his age do like paint ball, baseball, laser tag, dancing, hiking and camping, etc.

Funding for vital arthritis research and prevention programs face an unprecedented and immediate threat. The House has voted to cut more than $2 billion from research and prevention programs that directly impact people with arthritis. The bill is now in the hands of the Senate who will determine the future.

If these proposed cuts to this year’s funding are enacted at the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, arthritis programs will be reduced which will take years to recover and delay much-needed research.

Your Senators need to hear from the American people that cuts inarthritis research funding do more harm than good. We ask that you contact your Senators now to let them know why arthritis research funding is important to you, your family, your community, and our nation.

How to Hide Zits with Makeup

Interview with Meredith Boyd

I am so thankful to Meredith Boyd for taking the time to answer some of the questions that a lot of you girls have been asking me about pimples, acne, zits and blackheads. I mean its not necessarily dinner conversation but this is a serious matter in pageantry. No one wants to walk into interview with a spotlight on their forehead. Well, Meredith Boyd, founder of Mere Cosmetics, clears up the subject on pimples…literally.

Q. Is there a way to conceal that unwanted pimple?

Meredith: Absolutely! Here is the process on how to hide the zits with makeup:

1.First and foremost, don’t mess with it! You will only make it worse by spreading the bacteria and cause more breakouts.

2.Wash your hands.

3.Wash the face with a mild non-irritating face cleanser like Cetaphil and use an oil-free moisturizer.

4.Use Visine to literally “take the red out” and calm the area of redness, wait 5 minutes.

5.Apply foundation of your choice to entire face. I prefer a cream based foundation in the Mere Cosmetics line which glides on the skin and helps to easily hide imperfections.

6.Using a concealer brush apply a cream based foundation two shades lighter than your face foundation color to the pimple and lightly brush outwards around the area. I use cream based foundations instead of concealers (concealers tend to be a little too thick in consistency and difficult to use when covering acne) and it’s easier to use a cream-based foundation to build upon as it’s a medium coverage product rather than a light liquid, ultimately resulting in a natural, finished look. I’ve surprised many of my clients with this technique and they are amazed that I use no concealers to cover their imperfections. Think outside the box and try it!

7.Apply a very light shade of loose translucent powder (again counteracting any redness), my go-to product is Mere Cosmetics translucent powder as it’s been milled three times giving a feathery light appearance to the face. Never use compact powders as this adds wax to the face and ultimately more shine. Loose powder will SET the foundation and concealer in place.

8.Avoid pressing too hard on the blemish with the brush as you will only wipe the product away. Use a light hand and set with powder.

9.Finish entire face with a loose powder in a natural shade matching your skin tone, this will set your entire face and add the last layer of protection to your problem area.

Q. Do the methods for hiding blemishes vary in a photo shoot versus a public appearance?

Meredith: Makeup varies just slightly from eye color shades to false eyelashes. I highly recommend doing your “full stage face” for appearances with the exception of three important areas: do not use large lashes, dark eye shadows or dark/bright lipstick. Also, tone down the lips to a more natural earthy tone. Remember, if you don’t use enough makeup, you will look washed out and tired in your photos. And nothing speaks the truth more than a candid snapshot!

The key to making your face pop in appearance photos is a medium based foundation (cream, not liquid), medium tone eye shadows (colors that enhance your eye color – earth tones like browns and grays), lightly line your eyes with eyeliner (not jet black, something soft like chestnut brown or navy) and use small eyelashes to pop the eyes. I suggest #53 from Ardell or Andrea and then use mascara to blend lashes together. This brand is the easiest to apply and looks polished for appearances.

Lastly use a neutral spice colored lipstick with a clear gloss to add some luster to your finished look. My favorite lipstick is a creamy spice tone in the Mere Cosmetics line, pops the lips perfectly for interview and appearances…goes with any colored outfit, even pinks and reds! This takes all the guesswork out of lip color!

Q. How can the girls do a little preemptive strike against unwanted blemishes?

Meredith: Believe it or not, our skin is our biggest organ. Therefore, we must:

•Hydrate and drink 8-10 glasses of water a day

•Eat a “clean” diet plenty of fruits, veggies and lean proteins to help aid the body in producing new cells and keep the skin glowing and revitalized

•Never sleep with our makeup on. Wash and moisturize the face every day with mild products. Don’t try to self medicate with over the counter products, that may make the situation worse. Seek advice from a dermatologist for acne skin regimen/medication treatments.

•Keep your hands off your face and cell phones off your chin area

•Stay out of the sun

•Wash your makeup brushes every week with shampoo…this is a main culprit to growing bacteria and never share makeup or tools with others.

Portraits are critical in pageantry. A bad picture is hard to overcome, even with a good interview and on-stage competition. A great picture can really tell judges that you're serious about the title you applying for. This year's photographer excels in bring out the best in his clients and projecting that they are serious contenders.

Matt Boyd is based in Atlanta, Georgia and specializes in corporate and pageant headshots. He's a contributing photographer for Supermodels Unlimited and sponsors numerous pageants throughout the United States. When you trust her most precious pageant asset to a hair and make-up artist, it is best to go with experience and quality. This year's Best Pageant Make-Up artist has the track record and client support to stand out from the crowd.

Meredith Boyd, is an accomplished pageant consultant in Atlanta, a makeup artist with her own line of cosmetics, and a commercial print model. She held the title of Mrs. Georgia United States 2003 and placed 4th in the Mrs. United States Pageant. Meredith also held the title of Mrs. Georgia International 2008 and finished as 1st Runner-up.

Clients sing her praises as a make-up artist and pageant coach. We'll focus initially on her make-up work.

"With Meredith, I always look and feel like a million dollars when I'm done! " says the reigning Miss Junior Teen United States Copelyn Jue. "Her techniques enhance my best features and I don't look 'made-up'."

"Without her knowledge and expertise in cosmetics and her products, I would be a lost cause during competition!" says Brina Potvin who was her 'little' sister in 2008 holding the title of Miss Georgia Teen International 2008. "She has taught me everything I know about on-stage makeup and has provided me with beautiful results in photo shoots and on stage."

As mentioned previously, Meredith extends her work through her own make-up line called Mere Cosmetics.

"I use "Mere Cosmetics" during pageant competitions and even every day," asserts Potvin.

Former Mrs. Georgia United States Kathleen Batson says Meredith can enhance those 'over 40' as well.

"At my age (45), she really knows how to bring out my features and make them pop in my photos, which not every makeup artist in the pageant world knows how to do for us gals over 40! "

Another 'older contestant' commends her work and attention to detail during photo sessions.

"Meredith suggests outfits and jewelry to enhance the model and then compliments the choices with the correct make-up colors," says Laura Giordano, Mrs. Georgia International 2010.

Meredith's work can be seen on the national, state and local level. Lindsay Schafer has competed in several local pageants in Georgia and took her recent photographs with Meredith's assistance.

"I've never been so impressed!" says Schafer "Her work is amazing!"

Another state level contestant, Lynsey Sanderson says that Meredith will make you stand out in any room.

"When Meredith does your pageant make-up you will feel like the most beautiful woman in the room," says Lynsey, "She has the unique ability to apply make-up like she is painting a beautiful picture. She is very good at bringing out your best attributes with make-up"

Emily Cook, the reigning Miss Georgia who won (playing the oboe no less!!!), says Meredith is more than just a make-up artist.

"Meredith is sweet and caring and always has what is best for each individual girl in mind. She has constantly helped me out through my journey as Miss Georgia and will remain a friend for years to come. Meredith is a true gem of the pageant world!"

Meredith Boyd compliments her make-up artistry and cosmetics with pageant coaching.

Brina Potvin has enlisted Meredith's services as a pageant coach for over 5 years. She credits Meredith with improving her skills in interview and modeling.

"Without her I do not believe I would have been able to accomplish nearly half of what I have accomplished today," says Potvin. "She has instilled confidence and poise in me and has taught me so much about myself and my capabilities"

Copelyn Jue has worked with Meredith for two years and enjoys her training sessions together.

"She is honest, sincere, and tactful in her feedback," says Jue. "She teaches me what I need to know for a competition and then expects me to practice and apply what I have been taught."

Meredith expects a lot from her clients but works hard to enable them to meet those expectations.

"She works hard to make you your personal best and will pull the best out of you as well as push you to be the best you can be," says Lynsey Sanderson. "Meredith will work hard with you to transform yourself into a competitive contestant. "

All of these qualities are not only appreciated by contestants, but their support system. Rhonda Barney, pageant mom to Miss Teen Georgia World Megan Barney, appreciated Meredith's dedication to each client.

"Meredith truly pours her heart and soul into each and every girl she works with," says Rhonda. "Meredith pushes each girl to strive to be the the best and she truly does it in such a sweet and kind way."

Health Care Reform: What Does it Mean for People with Arthritis?

6 Ways Health Care Reform Impacts Our Community...
Regardless of what side the political fence you may be on, here's the facts on how the new health care reform will affect those with arthritis.

Immediately..
1. It eliminates exclusion of pre-existing conditions such as arthritis. In 6 months, the nearly 300,000 children living with arthritis will no longer be denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition. By January 1, 2014 this law will take effect for the 46 million adults with arthritis as well.

2. It eliminates restrictive annual and lifetime limits on coverage.
Because of the high cost of biologics, this provision is good news for those with inflammatory forms of arthritis who quickly meet annual maximums. Starting in 2014, the law will prohibit insurance companies from placing annual limits - or caps - on coverage. Until then, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services will determine annual limits starting late September 2010.

3. It allows adult children to stay on their parents' health insurance policies up to the age of 26.
This provision, which will take effect in less than six months, will allow adult children to stay on their parents' plans longer than most plans currently allow.

4. It bans insurance companies from dropping people from coverage when they get sick.
This provision, which takes effect in six months, will provide peace of mind to people with arthritis to know that they are not at risk of losing their health insurance.

5. It improves access to pediatric rheumatologists.
Through advocating for the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act, the Arthritis Foundation has been seeking a solution to the shortage of pediatric rheumatologists. As part of health care reform, a new pediatric loan repayment program for pediatric sub-specialists was included to encourage doctors to enter into fields such as pediatric rheumatology. We will keep you posted as we ensure that pediatric rheumatology is included in this new program.

6. It closes the gap in prescription drug benefitis for Medicare Part D.
Currently, people on Medicare are responsible for 100% of their prescription drug costs of up to $1,720 once their out-of-pocket expenses on copays reach $2,830. We call this $1,720 expenditure the "doughnut hole". Effective this year, the Medicare Part D drug program will provide a $250 rebate to Medicare beneficiaries who hit the doughnut hole. Next year there will be a 50 percent discount on brand name drugs for those who reach the doughnut hole. By 2020 beneficiaries will receive discounts of 75 percent on brand name and generic drugs.

Today the Arthritis Foundation is joining with patient advocacy organizations to fight against the increasing burden of out of pocket costs forprescription drugs.

Please join this effort and ask your Representative to cosponsor The Affordable Access to Prescription Medications Act of 2009 (H.R. 3799) and help put a monthly limit on out of pocket expenses for prescription drugs by sending a fully-editable, pre-drafted letter. With drug prices having risen nearly 10% in the last year alone, more and more people with arthritis have to choose between treatment and many of life's basic needs such as shelter, and food. It takes less than 5 minutes to make a difference.

Introduced by Rep. Hank Johnson (GA), this bill aims to provide much needed relief to those in your community struggling to pay for the medication needed to maintain their health by:

Establishing a $200 cap on the amount a person can be charged for any one prescription for a 1-month supply; and
Limiting to $500 the total amount a person can be charged for ALL prescriptions taken in 1 month.

These caps would apply to both public and private insurance, including Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.

Arthritis Walk Kick Off Event!

The Arthritis Foundation Georgia Chapter hosted its annual Arthritis Walk Kick-Off Luncheon today at Maggiano's Buckhead to stir up excitement for volunteers, corporate donors and team leaders. This year's walk will be better than ever! I will keep you posted on how you can help - let's move together for better health and to prevent or treat arthritis!
This is my friend Dorothy Leone-Glasser, RPN, HHC, has lived with systemic lupus for over twenty-five years. She has overcome two forms of cancer, disabling arthritis, kidney failure, a coma, one heart attack, and three strokes. Today she is not only alive, but she is living well and paving the way to the future of wellness by creating the Wisdom of Wellness Project, LLC.

Matt Boyd is an Atlanta based photographer and graphic designer that has over a decade of experience. The Majority of his work involves corporate and pageant headshots. Matt works with his wife, Meredith; who was Mrs. Georgia International 2008; a model, actress and founder of Mere Cosmetics. On a personal note, I am sincerely humbled to be a part of this opportunity. My photos on stage at Miss Georgia 1997 were by the late Bob Richie and he was such a kind and talented man. 13 years later, here we are...it is a wonderful honor to say the least. Today we had the honor of hosting Jeanette Moreland, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2010, in our makeup and photo studio...the entire day was filled with smiles, laughter, singing and capturing the true spirit of such an sweet and talented young lady. Today’s shoot was for a featured spread in and upcoming issue of Supermodels Unlimited Magazine. The fashion shoot consisted of all kinds of headshots, fashion portfolio and fresh new looks for prom. Matt had a great time photographing her in all the beautiful wardrobe and I had such a fun time doing her hair and makeup for all the looks in the shoot. As a small town girl from Wisconsin, she not only captured the national crown, but also our hearts. Her platform is “The Power of One,” and she shows girls of all ages how they can make a difference in their school and community.

The secret it out! MTV was at our Atlanta photography studio last night filming an upcoming episode of MADE! The crew captured a 15 year old named Brittany, transform from a shy tomboy to a winning pageant contestant. Mere Cosmetics supplied all the hair and makeup services for this segment and Matt Boyd Photography shot a complete pageant model portfolio and headshots for her upcoming competition. After the shoot, Brittany said, "I have never felt this confident in my life about anything...my confidence has never been higher than it is right now, I feel like a winner and better yet, I feel like I can really win the title now!" The U.S. Marine Corp Toys For Tots Program and the Powder Springs Police Honor Guard have teamed up to host Tournament

As many of you know, my husband Matt is Lieutenant of Detectives with The Powder Springs Police Department, which is a 40-man department within Cobb County. He is also the commander of the Honor Guard Unit. The department is in desperate need of funds to buy uniforms for its 6-person Honor Guard. The city cut all expenses for the police department this year, so the guard is hosting a fundraiser to help get uniforms on their own.

The primary role for honor guards is to provide funeral honors for fallen officers. Honor guards may also serve as the "guardians of the colors" by displaying and escorting the state and national flag on ceremonial occasions at official city functions as directed by the Chief of Police. They are ambassadors to the public, presenting a positive image of their service, and assisting with the recruiting effort.

Honor Guard members are not paid for their time to attend these important events, they do it because of their love for their comrades and community.

In partnership with the U.S. Marine Corp, the goal of this tournament is to raise funds and toys; which will bring the Marine Toys For Tots program closer to their goal of 810,000 toys and provide funds to assist both the Marine Corp and the Powder Springs Police Department’s newly formed Honor Guard Unit.

Here's how you can help: I will be selling raffle tickets for $10 to win a new GLOCK (the lucky winner will have a background check prior to winning) and golfers are $85 per person. I will also be collecting toys! Please see attached flyer for event details.

Talk about inspiring! I wanted to share a special message I was greeted upon when I entered the UCB Training Campus this afternoon, it said, "We are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process, we will catch excellence."
Today I had the unique opportunity to speak to the entire Canadian sales force for UCB, a global biopharma focused on severe diseases with operations in more than 40 countries! In the midst of insurance paperwork, scheduling to see doctors, cruicial scientific testing and research is the child or adult battling a disease trying to live day by day. It was inspiring for me to share my story with UCB's Canadian sales force to bring home a patient's perspective of having rheumatoid arthritis and why their job is so important. UCB is passionate about enabling families with severe diseases to enjoy normal, everyday lives and I just want to thank them again for everything they do to help the 46 million people living with arthritis!

Health care reform continues to be a hot and controversial topic. Members of Congress want and need to hear from voters, like us! Together we can voice our concerns about health care reform legislation. I urge you to email or call, or better yet, see your Members of Congress while they are home in the district or state. Tell them about the health care needs of people with arthritis. Now is the time!

Good news - Senator Rockefeller (D-WV) recognizes the importance of access to affordable medications. He introduced on August 6, "The Affordable Access to Prescription Medications Act of 2009" (S. 1630). This legislation would cap out-of-pocket costs for medications - including arthritis drugs under Medicare Part D as well as those with private insurance. It would cap prescription drug costs at $200 out-of-pocket per monthly prescription and a total monthly out-of-pocket cap of $500 for all prescriptions. Senator Rockefeller is working to include this legislation in health care reform legislation. Please tell your Senators about this important legislation and how it would greatly benefit people with arthritis.

During the month of August, many Members of Congress return to their home districts and states for the district work period. Your Representative and Senators may be holding public town hall meetings or other public events during the month as they want and need to hear from you, their constituents. This is your chance to express your views on health care reform and to share the Arthritis Foundation's principles for health care reform. It is very important for Congress to understand why people with arthritis want health care reform.

I strongly encourage you to attend a town hall meeting in your area. Contact your local Arthritis Foundation Chapter and ask to speak with the staff person who handles advocacy. He/she will be able to give you more information about local town hall meetings, and can connect you with other advocates who plan on attending. Local Chapter Map

FDA Advisers Urge Smaller Doses of Acetaminophen

On June 30, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel recommended greater regulation of acetaminophen to reduce deadly overdoses and liver injury. Recommendations that affect people with arthritis include switching the 1,000 milligram dose to prescription status; limiting the maximum single dose of the drug to 650 milligrams; and lowering the maximum daily dose; eliminating prescription painkillers that combine acetaminophen with strong narcotics; and stronger labeling.

The Arthritis Foundation supports the recommendations of the panel, which help to reduce the risks of serious adverse effects from acetaminophen, and applauds the FDA for the prompt action. “Acetaminophen is an important drug which helps to alleviate the daily impact and pain of arthritis for millions of Americans. We believe that people with arthritis must be made aware of potential side effects of drugs so they can decide about the level of risk they are willing to accept. The recommendation to reduce the maximum dose of acetaminophen will help to make this a safer drug for people with arthritis,” said John H. Klippel, M.D., president and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation.

The continued concern over safety of arthritis pain relievers underscores the tremendous impact of arthritis on the nation, and the need for ongoing research for development of new medications, treatments and understanding of the disease. The Arthritis Foundation recommends patients discuss concerns with their physicians and stresses the importance of weight control and exercise, drug therapy and surgical options for the management of pain and functional limitations caused by arthritis.

The Arthritis Foundation has been advocating for many years for the creation of a juvenile arthritis registry. A JA registry would improve the care children with arthritis receive. It would help pediatric rheumatologists make better decisions about the type of medications our children need and it could serve as an early warning system if there are unintended side effects or outcomes of JA therapies. Health care reform now for people with arthritis! Today, fellow advocates, including my friend and Young Professionals Board member Aimee Busquet, stormed Capitol Hill to let Congress know people with arthritis need health care reform. There are 45 million Americans without insurance, millions who are underinsured, and the rising trend that paying for health care is contributing to upwards of half of all bankruptcies in the U.S.

Congress has been working on legislation to reform the health care system over this past year. Starting this week, Congress is planning to discuss this legislation in committees and it will eventually reach the Senate and House floor.

It is very important that you tell your Members of Congress about the unique health care needs of people with arthritis. If you are currently experiencing challenges accessing or paying for health care, please tell Congress your story. If you don't tell them about the problem, Congress can't include a solution in the legislation.
